Haiyan, a super typhoon, was the same intensity as a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, a scale that measures the strength of hurricanes. Just before hitting the Philippine coast, Haiyan was stronger than Hurricane Katrina prior to hitting New Orleans, according to the Washington Post.
The national death rate for Haiyan is 3,976 with 18,175 injuries, according to HuffingtonPost.com. The death toll is expected to rise.
Many people are without food, water and medical supplies. Over 9.7 million people have been affected by the typhoon, according to USAToday.com. Supplies are urgently needed. There are various foundations where people can donate to help the victims.
