The sound of sneakers squeaking echoes off the gym floor as a girl calls “Mine!” and dives for the ball. Volleyball season is here!
First Flight’s varsity volleyball team started off its season with a mix of wins and losses, but the Nighthawks hope to turn things around and enjoy a successful conference season.
“It just depends. We have the potential,¨ assistant coach Stu Serine said. ¨It’s just whether or not we gel and get to where we are supposed to be.”
The 2016 team made it to the second round of the playoffs. This year’s group hopes to make it even further.
“I think if we play to our full potential we will go pretty far, but we just need to learn to play to our full potential and not get so down on ourselves,” senior Kendall Weeks said.
Serine has been a women’s volleyball coach for 26 years and has quite the experience and passion for the game.
¨It’s a very frantic game and it has a lot of skills that are not natural skills. It’s a challenge,¨ Serine said. ¨It’s exciting, you get to hit balls as hard as you can, you can’t foul out and you don’t have to run a whole lot.¨
This is a team of people who get along well off the court, which helps them work together on the court.
“My favorite part about this team is how we all get along and we all like each other,” Weeks said. “It’s the first year in a long time that we actually all get along.”
Sophomore Landis Limon is new to both First Flight and volleyball. Starting her first year at the school, Limon thought it would be a good idea to get involved and meet new people. She found out volleyball was a great way to do that as the team welcomed her with open arms.
“Everybody supports everybody,” Limon said. ¨We try to get together once a week to get breakfast and things like that are my favorite part, to build friendships with the team.¨
Senior Cierra Haley has been playing volleyball for five years now and has great confidence in this year’s team.
¨My favorite part about this team is how we can have fun together but be serious when we need to be,¨ Haley said. “We will go as far as we try for.¨
