On Tuesday (Feb. 27), First Flight is hosting its first ever Curriculum Fair so parents and students can have a better understanding of schedules, all of the classes offered here, and graduation requirements.
Following a presentation by counselors from 6 to 6:45, parents and students are encouraged to visit different classrooms and hear straight from teachers about available classes. The event begins in the David E. Oaksmith Auditorium. Once parents and students are released to visit classrooms, student ambassadors will be in the halls to help people find the teachers they’d like to see.
Counselor Kyle Eaker was inspired by his previous school to bring the Curriculum Fair to First Flight, after hearing from parents that they wanted to be more involved in the scheduling of classes.
“Parents would like to be as informed as possible but also want their high school students to be independent, Eaker said. ”This is a good way to allow them to learn about the class without bugging (students) as much. And they will be able to come ask questions and allow students independence of picking their courses.”
While this is the first ever Curriculum Fair here, similar presentations have been made in the past, but those often lacked good attendance. This year, the counselors have tweaked the event in order to allow students and parents to have face-to-face conversations with potential teachers, instead of just reading about courses on a Powerpoint presentation.
“The idea is to meet a teacher teaching that subject. You can learn a lot in that first interaction with somebody,” Eaker said.
English and Creative Writing teacher Hunter Will feels that Curriculum Night will benefit students when it comes to choosing classes for the following year.
“Students who are considering taking an elective or core class will feel more comfortable being in a space they are eventually going to be in,” Will said. “Like Mr. Eaker said, if you go and visit the shop class and you’re inspired by it, you are probably going to sign up for shop class.”
Teachers will meet with parents and students in 10-minute blocks, with five minutes allotted for class changes. The event is scheduled to end at 7:55.
