Issues are presented to the teams, which represent different member countries of the U.N., at competitions and the countries then discuss and debate those issues following along with their countries opinions.

“College kids run the whole program,” Model U.N. co-avidser Susan Mcfarlene said. “These kids are usually political science or international department majors. The students involved gain a lot of important information about other countries.”

On Jan. 3, members of the FFHS team will be visiting the Supreme Court building. The next day they will visit the United Arab Emirates and Togo embassies, which are two of the countries they will be representing Feb. 20-23 at competition on the campus of Old Dominion University (ODU).

For the competition in February, the students from FFHS will represent Belarus, Togo, United Arab Emirates, Pakistan and New Zealand.  They will also discuss historical crises like the Russo-Japanese Conflict of 1904 while at ODU.

Many members of the club appreciate the opportunity to go to Washington, D.C. before the actual competition.

“I’m excited to go the embassies,” junior Isaiah Lewis said. “There aren’t many opportunities in high school to learn about places outside the U.S. and other nationalities.”
