How to be single on Valentine’s Day

Suzanne Harrison, Staff Writer

Valentine’s Day. When the holiday comes to mind, most people think of their special someone. The average spent on Valentine’s Day overall comes to about $14 billion, according to statisticbrain.com. So, the question is, what makes Feb. 14 the day you should buy your loved one a flower? Why can’t someone give you a box of chocolates any day of the week?

What to do on Valentine’s Day has also been changing in recent years, with girls deciding to spend the holiday in with a couple of friends rather than out with a significant other. Even so, the statistics show that 53 percent of women would end their relationship if they did not receive something on Valentine’s Day, according to statisticbrain.com.

If you want tips on how to be that 38.8 percent that spends it alone, listen up:

Go see the cheesy movie that comes out on Valentine’s Day: Go by yourself or grab a couple of girlfriends to go make fun of that Hollywood hunk who has his shirt off throughout the entire movie. No one will be there during the matinee showing, and you and your friends can laugh about how unrealistic it is. “The Choice,” the newest movie based on a Nicholas Sparks book, released last weekend and is the perfect cheesy romance film to satisfy your rom-com needs.

Hit up your local drug store for cheap candy: A bunch of candy goes on sale Valentine’s Day. I mean, two-for-one king-size Kit Kat Bars? You need that in your life. “I usually like to eat my sorrows away,” junior Brady Creef said. Sophomore Alexis Bowlin agrees: “I love to buy myself more chocolate than I can eat,” she said.

Treat. Yo. Self.: Get your nails done, go on a shopping spree, get a haircut. Whatever it is that makes you feel special, do it. Who says you have to dress up for a night out? Dress up for yourself!

Send flowers or chocolates to another single friend: They won’t be expecting it and it will be a sweet gesture they’ll never forget!

Binge-watch your favorite show: A super-fun way to spend your time and eat all your cheap Valentine’s candy. If you don’t see at least two holiday episodes in one sitting, you’re doing it wrong. Here are some recommendations of Valentine’s Day-themed episodes you can watch on Netflix.

  • Parks and Recreation “Galentine’s Day” season 2, episode 16: Leslie holds her traditional Galentine’s Day party and things go don’t go according to plan.
