Are you ready to do the Harlem Shake?
February 25, 2013
Quite frequently, a new trend will hit social networks, and kids across the nation will take part in the bizarre but catchy fad. Planking, twerking, and Gangam Style were some of 2012’s most popular trends. The newest craze that has spread at a furious rate is the Harlem Shake.
The Harlem Shake is a dance that starts with one person dancing to an escalating beat, while the people around him seem to not even notice his presence. Suddenly when the beat drops, multiple dancers appear, and go crazy to the Harlem Shake song.
Whomever starts the dance is usually wearing a mask and an odd-looking costume. When the other dancers join in, they appear in crazy costumes as well.
The Harlem Shake has reached a wide range of viewers and participants. Office workers, soldiers, the animals at SeaWorld, and even swimmers underwater have been featured doing the Harlem Shake on YouTube.
Last week at FFHS, Mrs. Will’s third period English class recorded themselves doing the Harlem Shake. The video was aired on the Friday morning announcements to the excitement of students.
A schoolwide Harlem Shake video will be shot on Tuesday, Feb. 26 during empower time in the gymnasium; students need to report to the gym immediately after third period if they wish to be a part of the video. G-rated costumes and dance moves are encouraged by administrators.
FFHS students Jordan Rodrigues and Dillon Meredith announced the event, and Meredith got it approved for the whole school to participate. Rodrigues and Meredith came up with the idea after seeing all of the Harlem Shake YouTube videos.
“Since we have some good school spirit this year, we figured we could try doing the Harlem Shake,” Rodrigues said. “I hope that our video goes viral and gets millions of views to get our school’s name out there.”
