If you’ve ever wondered who plans homecoming along with all of the spirit days, you can thank the dedicated members of First Flight’s SGA.
Student Government Association is a partnership between the school administration team and the student body and is committed to alleviating issues within the school.
“We try to build up the spirit within the school,” co-sponsor Adam Herman said. “If there are issues we can bring them up through representation to the principal and to the school improvement team.”
Aside from dealing with school-wide issues, the student government is in charge of organizing spirit days, keeping track of spirit points and benefiting the community as a whole through events like canned food drives.
When a class brings an issue or suggestion to a meeting, it is discussed among the class representatives. The overall decision is brought through a vote led by the 2017-18 president, senior Mollee Sinks, and vice president Emma Strickland.
“As SGA vice president, I look over what the other classes are doing and make sure they are looking over their class,” Strickland said. “Also that they are doing what they are supposed to be doing while working together as a whole for the school.”
With many changes already being set in place, our officers hope that our student body can come together and embrace the change for the betterment of our school.
“We’ve already had a change with class floats and colors,” Sinks said. “Although it doesn’t seem like a very popular one, I’m hoping that we can just embrace it and get more involved in the community.”
To get involved in the student government, you can talk to any of your class officers about issues you see fit to be fixed or ideas you have about events within the school.
“SGA is important because it helps the students have a say in what goes on in the school,” Strickland said. “Without the SGA we wouldn’t have much representation and the administration likes to actually hear it from the students because they have the perspective of being a student in our school.”
If you ever feel the need for your voice to be heard by the student body or the administrative team, you can contact Sinks at sinksmo0128@daretolearn.org or Strickland at stricklandem0501@daretolearn.org as well as your class representative. Students are also encouraged to attend SGA meetings to voice their opinions or concerns.
