The hair spray is bought, the jean jackets are waiting to be thrown on, the vibrant-colored lipstick is ready to be worn — it’s time for the ‘80s-themed miniature Dance-a-Thon!
National Honor Society is hosting an ‘80s-themed Dance-a-Thon for students and faculty on Saturday, Feb. 24, from 7 to 11 p.m. in the FFHS rotunda. All proceeds from the dance will go toward the NHS Scholarship for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) students.
Starting Monday, Feb. 19, through Friday, Feb. 23, students from NHS are going to be set up at all three lunches selling pledge sheets and Dance-a-Thon tickets, NHS president Arabella Saunders said.
“A pledge sheet is $3 and a ticket just to attend the dance is $5. We’ll also be selling $5 raffle tickets,” Saunders explained. “With the pledge sheets you can go around and ask your friends, family, teachers and neighbors to pledge you per hour danced. If you get $10 per hour pledged and you dance all four hours, you can get a $40 donation.”
The more pledges students get, the more money raised for the DACA scholarship. Throughout the night, students will have the opportunity to enter in a raffle for a chance to win prizes donated from a variety of local businesses.
“We are going to have one big raffle basket and then we are going to raffle some of our bigger gifts separately,” Saunders said.
Some of the prizes donated from local business include a $50 gift certificate to Chilli Peppers, $20 gift certificate to OBX Frozen Yogurt and a free week of breakfast at Barrier Island Bagels. There have also been an assortment of prizes donated from larger retailers.
“We got a boogie board as a donation from Ocean Atlantic Rentals, two shirts from Katin, and we got a whole big prize package from Sun Bum with sunscreen, a towel, a beach ball, lip balm and all kinds of stuff,” senior Beverly Murry said.
The night full of fun will also include free snacks and refreshments, and a free photo station.
“There will be a backdrop that’s ‘80s themed and we will have the paper cut-outs in the shape of an ‘80s afro and neon sunglasses, and little cute things like that,” Saunders said.
Bring $3 to your lunch on any dates this week and grab your pledge sheet to participate in this event that you don’t want to miss. Tickets will also be sold during lunch and at the door for $5 for those who just want to come to the event without getting sponsors.
“It’s a good opportunity for teachers, students and NHS members to give back to the scholarship,” Saunders said. “And it’s going to be an all around good time.”
