Senior Hannah Ellington and junior Abby Hite catch up with a math teacher who has moved to an old vacation spot:
How long have you been teaching?
“37 years, going on the 38th.”
Where did you teach beforehand?
“Montville, Connecticut and then Groton, Connecticut.”
Have you taught anything else?
“I was a math teacher, math department chair (and I) taught and was an administrator at the same time, athletic director, assistant principal, principal, at central office as Director of Teaching (curriculum and testing), and the last two years in Connecticut I was teaching middle school teachers how to teach without as much memorization.”
Why did you choose to teach this subject?
“I always liked the logic involved with math and it teaches you how to think.”
Why did you move to the OBX/start working at FFHS?
“We vacationed here and my oldest son teaches at Manteo, so we wanted to come down and spend more time with him.”
First impressions of First Flight?
“It’s nice to see kids who are willing to work, are polite and ready to learn.”
What do your weekends consist of?
“Golf and behind the scenes of football.”
What would you do if you weren’t teaching?
“Retired. I would probably still be here with my son.”
Hobbies/special talents?
“Golf.”
Describe teaching in one word.
“Rewarding.”
What college did you go to? What did you major in?
“University of Connecticut for bachelors in math, Eastern Connecticut State for masters, and Sacred Heart University for administrators degree.”
What would you want to know about living on the OBX?
“Anything from the locals — the history, where to eat, anything that the locals know but the tourists don’t.”
What are you looking forward to?
“Seeing light bulbs go off.”
