It’s mid-July, you’re driving down the beach road with your friends, windows rolled down. You can feel the wind whipping past your face as the radio is blasting music on Beach 104. The opening to “Heat Waves” by Glass Animals begins to play, and you and your friends scream the chorus.
“Heat Waves” isn’t the only big song of the summer. In this article we will be discussing the music of the closing season, and music that is highly anticipated for this coming fall.
GEMINI RIGHTS – Steve Lacy
Getting right into it, “Gemini Rights” by Steve Lacy is a collection of 10 songs, genres ranging from pop, to jazz, to R&B. The album starts off slow with “Static,” and picks up again with “Helmet,” but the lyrics of “Helmet” aren’t that of an upbeat pop song. Even so, as the album progresses you can feel the way the songs blend together, making it an excellent album in my opinion.
HARRY’S HOUSE – Harry Styles
I can’t say that I wholly enjoyed “Harry’s House” when it was first released. It was full of synth, and seemed more like Styles’s audience was the ‘80s. The more I listened, the more the album grew on me. I can’t say that it’s my favorite album in the world, because that would be a lie. I can say, however, that I wish it was a bit more like Styles’s first self-titled album, “Harry Styles,” an album filled with rock, mixed perfectly with ballads. He sure does seem to have a knack for naming albums after himself.
RUNNING UP THAT HILL (A DEAL WITH GOD) – Kate Bush
I’d be surprised if anyone told me they had never heard this song after it was played for millions of people in the fourth season of “Stranger Things.” The epic scene was in the sixth episode of the latest season, with Max’s escape from Vecna. Its first release was in 1985 as Bush’s lead single on her album “Hounds of Love.” It reached number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. Even with it being so popular, it’s extremely overplayed in my opinion.

MIDNIGHTS – Taylor Swift
Moving onto up-and-coming music, Taylor Swift recently announced her 10th studio album on August 28. There are 13 tracks on the album, and it is set to be one of the most anticipated albums of the fall. The release date is locked in as October 21. Knowing Taylor Swift, there’s no chance that this won’t be an emotional record.
CRACKER ISLAND – Gorillaz
While we don’t know if there will be any features on “Midnights,” Gorillaz new album “Cracker Island” has a star-studded list. A few of the features include Tame Impala, Thundercat and Stevie Nicks. How Gorillaz managed to score Stevie Nicks, I will never know, but I’m immensely happy about it. The album is set to be released February 24, 2023.
THE CAR – Arctic Monkeys
Now, onto the album that I am personally most excited for, that being Arctic Monkeys’ “The Car.” Unfortunately for them, they decided their release date would be on October 21, the exact same day that “Midnights” by Taylor Swift is set to be released. They announced this just five days before Swift’s announcement. I’m going to have to switch between albums for every other song.

I’m also super excited for the new Arctic Monkeys album as well as Midnights! I also agree that Harry’s House was good, but not great.

I agree that Running Up That Hill is super overplayed, but I kind of relate to it. The lyrics are super meaningful and they hold a lot of power behind them. I’m definitely ready for it to not be THE song anymore though.
