The First Flight High School Spring Concert is here. On “May the 4th,” the introductory jazz band will begin playing incoming house music at 5:45 p.m. in the rotunda. The strings program will begin the 6 p.m. show in the auditorium, playing selections from “Star Wars.” Both choirs will be joining the orchestra to perform “Space Oddity” and “Duel of the Fates.”
Next, the choir will perform several songs, one titled “I Am Voyager.”
“It has a lot of interesting imagery,” director John Buford said, adding that this song fits the theme of “May the Fourth.” “I started looking at music over the summer that would fit our theme for the concert.”
The music program has been rehearsing for the concert since January: “After the winter concert is out of the way,” (we start rehearsing),” Buford said.
The concert band is playing three songs, including an exciting piece called “Godzilla Eats Las Vegas.” It incorporates “unique percussion such as breaking glass, French horn ‘roars’, and interesting piano parts played by Brigid O’Neil,” director Bob Ebert said. The band is also playing a piece called “Miss Trombone,” which features the trombone section, and an Arabian-inspired piece.
As always, the Honors Jazz Band will be in the rotunda after the concert, performing four songs to wrap up the night. This marks the final concert of the year and – for seniors in band, chorus and orchestra – the final show of their First Flight music careers.
The introductory and honors jazz band, along with the choir, will also be performing at First Friday in Manteo on June 2. First Friday is a street festival held in downtown Manteo.
