Seniors Cassidy O’Neil and Dair McNinch caught up with a new math teacher who isn’t a new face to a lot of FFHS students:
How long have you been teaching?
“25 years.”
Where did you teach beforehand?
“I was at First Flight Middle School, but before I came to First Flight I was in Brazil for nine years, and in Indonesia for four years teaching high school.”
Have you taught anything else?
“I taught a theater class once.”
Why did you choose to teach this subject?
“It wasn’t because of any of my high school teachers. Mostly because I was good at it, and when I got out of college I was bumming around for a few years. I went to Europe and messed around. My father was a professor and he said, ‘Why don’t you teach math, you’ll like it.’ So I went back to school.”
Why did you move to the OBX and start working at First Flight?
“We had been vacationing down here since when we were overseas in Asia.”
What do your weekends consist of?
“Recovering from the week mostly. If i’m lucky, Ethan and I will play Ping-Pong or shoot hoops.”
First impression of First Flight High School?
“How many people I know here, all the students, and how welcoming they have been. I don’t think that I was the perfect teacher for everybody I had in the middle school. I try to make my classes what I would want them to be. I wonder if I was 13, could I handle me as a teacher? But I feel that I fit better in the high school.”
Hobbies/Special Talents
“I can shoot a 3.”
Describe teaching in one word
“I can’t do it one word: I’d say living in the moment.”
College/Major
“Wake Forest, Business administration.”
